Nação da Música and Portal POPline, brazilian news sites had the privilege to listen to the full Head Above Water album! They reviewed the songs and here we will translate and post the reviews of each one of the songs.
Birdie – The song talks about freedom, questioning how to escape and fly even higher. It starts with melodic piano tones and it’s comparable to My Happy Ending, maybe because of the mid-tempo, but with intensity. The difference is that it has less guitars and more well-marked beats. The bridge is more dramatic with a very muffled voice and a beat that is almost a trap.
I Fell In Love With The Devil – It starts out with violins, the vocals are almost angelic, accompanied by the piano. The song sounds more mature than Birdie, but the structure is similar. Softer in the verses, and exploding in the chorus. Please save me from this hell, she sings at the end of the chorus. The violins come back in the bridge, and the vocals are really beautiful. It will certainly be a fan favorite.
Dumb Blonde – This is the first song on the tracklist that is more cheerful and has the “cheerleader” touch that Avril explored in her hit Girlfriend, for example. It does not have as many guitars, though. Imagine a mix of Girlfriend and Demi Lovato’s Confident, also add a dash of Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani. The lyrics are well empowered, where she reaffirms that she is not a dumb blonde.
It Was Me – The slow verses and piano in the background return in this song. The track is more of an intense ballad and it has well-marked beats, the style is similar to Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris
Souvenir – One of the strongest ballads on the album, but it has a more positive feel. It talks about good moments that she wants to keep in life, in the chorus she sings about wanting to run away and taking a person as a small “Souvenir”. In the first few seconds, you can remember when Rihanna used a sample of I’m With You in Cheers (Drink To That) with those “yeah yeah”. But it’s a very different song, it features a stronger beat, with a small part with verses more serious than normal, which changes quickly
Crush – A slow-paced song, but not in a dramatic way. Both the verses as well as the chorus are more paused and at certain times the voice sounds almost like a whisper. Similar to Tell Me It’s Over, the lyrics are about a burning passion. That look in your eyes drives me crazyshe sings, I can’s live without you.
Goddess – The track sounds acoustic, as there is not much drums and the guitar is what stands out in the background. It can remind you of Push, but simpler. It is not a slow song, the verses and chorus are accelerated. You treat me like a goddess, you find me so sexy in my pyjamas, she sings. You can see that this is a more positive album, talking about love overcoming.
Bigger Wow – A cheerful song with fast beats, it might not be a “dance song” but it’s a track with “good vibes”. It’s similar to Starving by Hailee Steinfeld, Grey and Zedd. The background guitar is very similar, being exactly the element that helps find the vibe.
Love Me Insane – A song that talks about attraction and love, describing the day they met and that the person is capable of driving her crazy. The rhythm changes between the verses and the chorus, starting out slow and growing as she sings. Even though it has instruments like keyboard and drums, everything is very subtle. The most impressive part is the bridge, where you can hear beautiful violins. Baby, let’s go crazy, I’m gonna lose my mind she sings, as if it were something bad, but very positive.
Warrior – The last track of the album, she sings about the battles she has lived, not giving up and being a warrior, she fights for her life. Nothing is going to stop me now she sings. It’s undoubtedly one of the best songs in this new production and it is very moving.
Birdie, Dumb Blonde, and Bigger Wow stand out, as they have potential to be singles, according to Portal POPline
